Living the island life

Went to pulau ubin on saturday- sho fun! took pseudo arty pictures but now i'm too lazy to upload the pictures. HEE. For $2, i took a boat out of the mainland- ironinc that it should be called that, since it's a hop from island to island- and landed in malaysia. Felt like it, anyway. Walking through the tiny village centre, i felt like i was transported back in time, to "60's Singapore", as the brochure so proudly declared. The air smelt salty and nice. The suroundings were as rustic as you can get in Singapore. Although the shore was littered with plastic bottles and other human rubbish, it was fun watching the little crabs scuttling about - purple pincers sho funky i like!

We cycled around the island; saw many, many temples and even a scarecrow or two. Got lost trying to find the German Girl Shrine and ended up on a dead-end at the top of a slope nobody in their right minds should attempt to cycle up to. Saw some NCC guys trekking, decked in full gear complete with heavy backpacks. Had yummy but sticky cocount at a roadside stall, with a big black dog snoozing next to me at the foot of the table. It was really nice to cycle down the slopes, wind blasting in my face and smelling the air; the pretty blue sky above reminded me that no matter how shitty life gets, there are always things worth living for. The simple pleasures in life.

Met up with Daphne on Monday and did some catching up; incredible how the years have passed, she has matured so much but i still feel the same. Still the directionless person looking for the safe path. Perhaps that's what a university degree does to you. It's such a cliche to think out of the box and all, but i guess that IS what gets you ahead. How else are you supposed to distinguish yourself apart from the other thousands of graduates? All over-qualified, over-paid and under-experienced. But even as replaceable as we are as fresh graduates, companies should not try to take advantage of the naive and easily-fooled and give bad welfare masked as character building. Would you recommend your closest friend to the job? But nobody told you life would be easy.

Bought a pretty cover for the ipod; korean flag! i like. But i think it wasn't such a hit with the ipod itself, cuz it retaliated by refusing to talk to me into the right ear. So now i've got to go get nice white earphones that turn gray eventually. yuck. They should come up with black earphones as well; or have they already done so and i was unaware?

And pretty earrings from forever 21! The only forever 21 clothes i bought was from the US store- hussy tops mom unknowingly paid for hur hur- but i like their earrings and necklaces from time to time. And the outlet in Vivocity wasn't as crowded as the Wisma one. More earrings as well.

I think the crowd that wasn't in forever 21 was at Carl's Junior. Stupid Wilson la bring me there that day make me crave for the salsa there :( super packed can! Haven't been there for quite some time prior to the rendezvous with mr liong. Sigh.

Was reading my diary that day and got all nostalgic. Gosh all that teenage angst and silly headaches. The horrible A' Level stress, the minor squabbles with friends, the bad crushes, the could-have-beens. But you know what? I miss those days, when life was all about school, friends, rugby. How a few sharp words from mdm shaafa made me so upset, only to be so stupidly happy a few moments later with an indon sighting. How hearing from mr yeo that i did well in my lit paper made my day. How nice it was to boot up and run onto the field. How simple things like going to JEC with daph with hokkien mee from the nearby hawker centre and stoning through econs was so nice. Going for breakfast on wednesday mornings with meghan at science centre mac's because it was double GP and seeing the impotent frustration on the GP tutor's face when we walked in just before the end of the lesson, because we always did well. Like how we used to bring vodka to school and have 'picnics' during recess, only to giggle all the way through econs tutorial because we were so damn high. How we used to sneak out during chinese period to go to 7-11 to get booze. It's no longer fun cuz we're all legal, y'know?

See? less photos = more words. Not sure if that's good or not. But it's my blog and i will whine if i want to, whine if i want to, whine if i want to~

Hanny wants to watch Happy Feet! :)
